Beginner

Build a solid foundation and discover the fundamentals of drumming.

Beginner lessons are designed to give you the skills, coordination and confidence needed to play your first beats and songs. You’ll learn how to set up and play the drum kit correctly while developing good technique from the start.

Lessons typically cover:

  • Matched and traditional stick grip
  • Correct posture, hand and foot technique
  • Basic drum notation and reading
  • Single and double strokes
  • Essential rudiments and sticking patterns
  • Basic rock, pop and funk grooves
  • Bass drum and hi-hat coordination
  • Simple fills and transitions
  • Playing along with music
  • Timing, counting and keeping a steady pulse
  • Introduction to dynamics and musical expression

Whether you’re completely new to drums or have played a little before, lessons are adapted to your ability and musical interests.

Intermediate

Develop your technique, coordination and musical vocabulary.

At intermediate level, we start moving beyond the basic beats and introduce the control and independence needed to become a more versatile drummer. You’ll work on playing more complex patterns while developing greater consistency, speed and musical awareness.

Lessons typically include:

  • Expanded rudimental vocabulary
  • Flams, drags, rolls and more advanced sticking
  • Intermediate drum fills and combinations
  • Developing hand and foot independence
  • Syncopated rhythms and more complex subdivisions
  • Rock, funk, pop, blues and other styles
  • Ghost notes and dynamic control
  • Hi-hat techniques and variations
  • Bass drum patterns and coordination
  • Playing around the kit
  • Improvisation and creating your own fills
  • Reading increasingly complex drum notation
  • Playing with backing tracks and real-world musical situations

The focus is on turning individual techniques into grooves, fills and complete musical performances.

Advanced

Refine your technique and develop the skills of a highly versatile drummer.

Advanced lessons are aimed at players who want to push their technique, coordination and musical understanding to a professional level. Work becomes increasingly individual, with exercises and repertoire selected around your goals, strengths and areas for development.

Advanced studies can include:

  • Advanced rudimental and technical exercises
  • High-speed single and double strokes
  • Advanced foot technique and coordination
  • Left-foot independence and cowbell exercises
  • Linear and orchestrated patterns
  • Advanced syncopation and subdivisions
  • Polyrhythms and odd groupings
  • Advanced funk, jazz, Latin and fusion concepts

  • Metric modulation and rhythmic displacement
  • Playing odd metres and changing time signatures
  • Advanced reading and interpretation
  • Developing your own sound and vocabulary
  • Transcription and analysis of professional drummers
  • Performance preparation and recording techniques

The aim is to take your playing beyond simply executing exercises and towards complete control, creativity, musicality and individuality behind the kit.
